Dr George Vekinis

PhD Physics, Head of Laboratory

Born in Athens, Greece, George studied Physics and Materials Engineering in South Africa, MBA in the UK and has lived in South Africa, UK and Greece. He has extensive experience in advanced ceramics and composites, fracture mechanics, thermomechanical systems for spacecraft, nanotechnology, environmental remediation, technology transfer, innovation management and other. He has over 120 publications. He is a Research Director at NCSR Demokritos, a Senior Consultant for the European Commission. President of the Hellenic Society for Science and Technology of Condensed Matter and President of a spin-off company.

Dr Galina Xanthopoulou

DSc (Chemical Physics), PhD Physical Chemistry, Senior Researcher

Galina was born in Kazakhstan where she studied and has lived in Kazakhstan and Greece. She is a worldwide expert in SHS and SCS, pioneering new SHS catalysts (DSc, 1996). She also has very extensive expertise in SHS refractories, pigments and other materials. She also pioneered the use of SHS for space applications (1984) while in the Soviet Union when she designed and developed the fibrous thermal protection tiles. She has over 250 publications and conference presentations and has been on numerous lecture tours in the US, Japan, Kazakhstan and elsewhere. She has also supervised nearly 200 research students at various levels in Kazakhstan and Greece.

Dr Amalia Marinou

PhD Materials Engineering, Post-Doc Research Associate

Amalia was born in Ptolemaida, Greece and studied at Ioannina University obtaining first her BSc and then her MSc in Materials Science and Engineering. She has worked on thermal spray coatings and corrossion resistance alloys. Her PhD work was carried out in ACCL on the development of "Combustion-Assisted Flame SpraYing" (CAFSY) at the University of Ioannina. She is working under contract on various EC and ESA-funded projects, especially the Rastas-Spear, Pulcher, Irena and the ReGS projects. She is also collaborating with industry.

Ms Rena Tsiftideli

MSc Quality Assurance, Administrative and Financial Officer

Rena was born in Athens and obtained her BSc in Agricultural Economics at the University of Ioannina Greece and her MSc in Quality Control (ISO) at the Open University. Rena has worked in retail (running her own business) and is currently the Administrative and Financial Officer of the laboratory  under contract.

Mr Diogenis Stratidakis

Higher Technical Diploma, Electronics, Research Assistant

Diogenis was born in Crete, Greece and studied In Athens. He lives in Athens and is experienced in a wide range of technical areas, including electronic, mechanical, thermal, computer etc. He is currently working under contract on our research projects.

Miss Olga Thoda

MEng Chemical Engineering, PhD Candidate

Olga  was born in Larissa and studied at the Metsovion Technical University of Athens for her MEng degree. For her diploma work she researched SHS and SCS inorganic pigments. She lives in Athens and is currently enrolled at Coventry University, UK to study for the PhD degree on SHS and SCS catalysts for hydrigenation of liquids.

Miss Irini Pavlou

BSc Printing Technology, Research Assosiate

Irini was born in the island of Poros and studied in Athens where she completed her BSc in Printing Technology with a diploma project on the development of inorganic fluorecent pigmens by SCS. She is also studying jewelery making and design for industry. Currently she is working on the development of novel industrial clay ceramics.

Dr Panagiotis Georgiopoulos

PhD Mechanics of Materials, Research Assistant

Panagiotis was born in Athens and graduated from the School of Applied Mathematical & Physical Sciences of the National Technical University of Athens at 2008. He was awarded the MSc degree on Applied Mechanics at 2010. His PhD (2010-2015) research involved the development and characterization of biodegradable polymer composites/nanocomposites. He is currently working in the ReGS project on numerical modelling (FEA) of the recession of ablative thermal protection systems of space capsules containing an embedded ReGS sensor. He is also working on the development and characterization of PLA-based hybrid composites.

Dr Sofia Karamanou

PhD Chemical Engineering, Post-Doc Research Assosiate

Sofia was born in Athens, Greece and obtained her MEng and PhD at the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. In the ACCL she is carrying out research on polymer-based composites with ceramic reinforcements under contract

Miss Kelly Christodoulou

MA Archaeology, Lab Research Assistant


Kelly was born in Atalandi Central Greece, and obtained the degree of  BA at the School of Archaeology of the University of Athens. She is curently studying for her MA carrying out Archaeometric research on Cu-Sn aloys. In the ACCL she is assisting in the industrial development of novel clay ceramics.

Mr Kosmas Papadopoulos

BSc candidate


Kosmas was born in Ptolemaida, Greece and is studying at the School of Materials Science and Enginering of the University of Ioannina. His work in the lab deals with the development of new nanostructured catalysts by the Solution Combustion Synthesis (SCS) method for the oxidation of diesel soot from engine exhausts.

Mr Dimitris Tzavelas

MEng candidate


Dimitris was born in Athens and is studying for his MEng degree at the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. His work in the lab deals with the development of nanostrutured metals and ceramics using the Solution Combustion Synthesis (SCS) method.

Major Ioannis Mentis

BSc Physics, MSc candidate

John was born in Athens and is a Major in the Hellenic Airforce. He obtained a BSc at the Airforce Academy, a second BSc in Physics at the University of Thessaloniki where he is currently studying for the degree MSc. In ACCL he is carrying out research on impact energy absorption by reinforced ceramic composites.
